Winter Storage

While it is perfectly OK to run your PlyFly Go-Kart all winter (they are great fun in the snow!), you may want to store the kart for the winter. Here is an excerpt from the Lifan Engine Owners Manual regarding winter storage, if you choose to do so:

Storing the Unit
Before long term storage of your power equipment product, typically 30 days or more, perform the following:
1. Set the fuel cock (valve) to the “OFF” position.
2. Let the unit continue to run until it stops itself, burning all of the fuel in the fuel system.
3. Turn the ignition switch to the “OFF” position.
4. Drain the engine oil in accordance with the “Oil Change Procedures” in this Owner’s Manual’s Maintenance section. Do NOT re-fill with oil until ready to use again.
5. Remove the Spark Plug in accordance with the “Spark Plug Maintenance” in the Owner’s Manual’s Maintenance section. Spray a lubricant, such as WD40®, into the Spark Plug hole to lubricate the top of the piston and walls of the cylinder. Replace the Spark Plug.
6. Pull starter rope until resistance is felt. This will place the valves in the closed position.
7. Add the recommended amount of fuel stabilizer, in accordance with the amount recommended by the manufacturer of the fuel stabilizer, to the unused gasoline left in the fuel tank.
8. Place the unit in a clean, dry, and secure location.

One quick tip to always keep your kart (and other gas engines) in top condition: Add fuel stabilizer to the gas when you buy it.

That way, if circumstances cause your kart to sit for a couple of months and/or you have forgotten to winterize and/or you don't use the gas up quite as quickly as you originally thought, you are much less likely to come back to find the gas is starting to go bad and possibly causing issues in your carburetor.

I've been personally doing this with good results for years now in my lawnmowers, generators and motorcycle, using STA-BIL Marine Forumla Ethanol Treatment as the additive since Ethanol was added. My riding mower is 20 years old and has never had engine problems. My motorcycle is 19 years old and the only time I've had problems with it was when I've failed to do this since it's fueled up directly instead of from a gas can.

There are other fuel stabilizers out there, but make sure to get one that also addresses Ethanol in the gas. I know in the DC area, it's almost impossible to get gas without Ethanol in it and "mechanics have seen increased cases of damage to small engines, in particular, the carburetor, attributable to the increased water retention by ethanol in fuel."(Wikipedia)
