Steering rack

Post by PlyFly#14 » Tue Sep 08, 2015 10:17 pm

I've noticed a lot of "play" on the rack on the drawer slide. This causes the steering column to skip and steering is lost! There's a little space below the rack, but not enough to put anything in between the bottom panel and rack that will glide. Before I tear it all apart, which appears what I will have to do, any suggestions?

I can try to post a picture of what I mean, hopefully you get the gist of it.

We saw this in one prototype and took a piece of the pre-finished 1/4 scrap and screwed it under the back of the rack. It worked like a charm after that and never skipped. You must be driving that thing hard!

That's exactly what I just did! I installed with the finished side facing up in case it gives a bit of extra slide. And I am putting this thing through it's paces....

Also note that I added rubber bumpers on either side of the rack since you can lock to lock and in doing so can damage the frame by contact with wheel rim. I'm experimenting and this is the first size. Will replace with larger if it's needed. These are used as cabinet door bumpers.

So, after a hard day driving the bottom rack popped down off the steering column. It appears the drawer slide popped out of its track and rotated the assembly down. Scary, this happened hitting a pot hole at about 28mph which resulted in a complete loss of steering!

I made a custom mod like above to prop it back. Attached is mod showing white shim before I stained to match and screwed it down with countersunk flat head screws. I suggest everyone do the same for safety.

Thanks for the input. We are struggling to figure this one out because we have not seen it for a very long time (really prototype #2 and we are on #10). We will issue a recommendation that everyone perform the fix shown above in the coming week.
